This was in a time of little concern for driver safety. You may understand how deadly these machines were by just knowing the facts. These men were sitting in bathtubs of gasoline and were actually driving a bomb.
Fire and all its horror would continue to haunt racing even to this day. However, with the reduction in fuel loads and using something other than gasoline, the use of aircraft fittings and self-sealing fuel cells, these fires continued for years but were much less frequent with this intensity.
Yes, both men were injured but did survive.
